VI. SUMMER ACADEMY GRÖDEN

FOR DRAWING AND WOOD SCULPTURE// JULY 22 – AUGUST 03, 2024

For the sixth time this year, the La Veta association is organizing the Val Gardena Summer Academy, a two-week course programme focusing on drawing, sculpture and casting in the heart of the South Tyrolean Dolomites.

The Summer Academy is dedicated to artists, sculptors, art students and artists.

A selected group of 20 international participants will each be led by a team of four artists.

The focus is on the human figure, from which large-format drawings, models and carvings are made based on living models.

Participants are familiarized with different aspects of drawing, enabling them to train their eye, develop their individual design language and deepen their drawing skills. Sculpting can be seen as a continuation of drawing, and here too it is possible to work from a living model. Participants also have the opportunity to develop their own work and are encouraged, supported and trained to analyze and critically question their work. Connections to space, volume and material are examined and the students’ own work is viewed and realized from different perspectives.

Classical materials such as clay, plaster and cardboard will form the basis for exploring new ways of depicting the human body, which this year will serve as preparation for the realization in wood and thus open up new worlds.

During the two weeks, there will also be a program of evening events including studio visits to various local artists, gallery visits, discussions, lectures, film evenings, hikes and get-togethers. The Summer Academy thrives on the mutual exchange between participants.

The exact program will be announced at the beginning of the course.

This year, the Summer Academy will be accompanied by the following four artists:

Hubert Kostner
Gregor Prugger
Hermann Josef Runggaldier
Aron Demetz

At the end of the two weeks, the participants have the opportunity to show their work to a wider audience in the form of a final exhibition. This expands the framework for additional questions such as the handling of space, the type of presentation, display and the dialog with and around artistic works.
