The Gabriele Münter Prize aims to make the outstanding achievements of contemporary female visual artists visible and is in the context of equality with artists. The prize is named after the painter Gabriele Münter (1877 Berlin – 1962 Murnau), one of the most important artists of modernism. Her example is still an encouragement for female artists today.
The Gabriele Münter Prize was awarded for the first time in Bonn in 1994 at the Frauenmuseum. The last and seventh award ceremony took place in 2017 in Berlin at the Akademie der Künste. After three years of voluntary efforts, the representatives of the BBK Bundesverband, the Deutscher Künstlerbund and the GEDOK (Association of Women Artists’ and Art Patrons’ Communities) have succeeded in making an eighth award possible in 2025 with funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM).
