City of Elmshorn ideas competition for ART IN PUBLIC SPACE

The artwork is intended to highlight, honor and recognize the achievements, living conditions and special challenges of the guest workers and their families who worked in Elmshorn from the 1950s onwards. The artwork is intended to highlight, encourage and allow an examination of the concept of guest workers, a reference to the fact that Germany has become a country of immigration and to the fact that the integration of new citizens is one of the perpetual tasks for all. In order to determine a suitable work of art in terms of motif, cost and size, a selection process will be carried out in two stages, in which freelance artists and groups can participate.

The competition is organized by the city of Elmshorn.

The reason for the competition is the conception and realization of an idea for an art installation, which is to be understood as a tribute to the achievements and living conditions of guest workers and their families in Elmshorn and the special challenges they face. The artwork is to be erected over a period of approx. 10 years at various locations in Elmshorn where it can be seen and experienced by the public. The first installation site is Holstenplatz, the final location is a fixed position near the railroad station, which is expected to be relocated and completed in 2034. In between, the transportable artwork will be set up at various as yet unnamed locations in the city.

58,000 is available for the realization of the idea selected by the award jury, including all competition costs.
