Annette Funke in Plauen

Icons” exhibition

Ikonen focuses on ambivalent figures that can be read ambiguously. Mother, warrior, goddess trigger ambivalent feelings and challenge us to position ourselves. Many points of view are possible, revealing different perspectives. Each placed in the center of the picture, they determine the created scenery and reflect historically evolved stereotypes, social narratives and ideals. The narrative “habitus” of the figures reveals their economic, cultural, symbolic and social potential. The figures touch on questions of self-image, identity and gender and they question the power of the representation of role models in social discourses.
