loc. 14: August 9 to 24, 2025
In spring 2024, the Schwabach gold beating craft was included in the Bavarian State Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The art biennial ortung is building on this tradition and is organizing the art days under the motto “In the sign of gold”.
What started as a regional event in 1999 has now developed into one of the most important image carriers for the city – “ortung” has established itself as a nationally recognized art event. The art biennial is now a permanent fixture on the regional and national scene and an unmissable event in Schwabach.
The special charm of this 16-day art biennial lies in the presentation of the works of art. Every two years, “ortung” transforms everyday spaces in Schwabach’s city center into a showroom: cellars, vaults, squares, green spaces, churches, even “real” galleries and sometimes even private warehouses are designed, changed and transformed into places to experience art.
The art, regardless of the craft technique from which it originated, must always have a relationship to the theme of “gold” – the Schwabach tradition of beating gold leaf should thus find its expression.
At each ortung, over 20 artists exhibit, project, screw or mount their works into the cityscape and open up new perspectives on art in places and non-places.
For two weeks in August, ortung invites visitors to stroll along the newly created art trail and track down, discuss, question, locate and award prizes for contemporary works “under the sign of gold” – because ortung is not only an exhibition that engages with the city, but also an art competition. In addition to an expert jury, all visitors choose a prize winner from among the exhibitors. Thus ortung starts with the awarding of the municipal art prize and ends with the awarding of the public prize. Between 9,000 and 12,000 visitors have attended in recent years.
