Halle (Saale)
Our association pays artists an exhibition fee because we believe it is natural to pay artists for their work.
(Katrin Eitner from the art and project space hr.fleischer e.V. in Halle (Saale))
Since when have you been paying an exhibition fee?
We were founded in 2009, still as a project by many students. In the following years, we began to apply for funding and thus enable the first exhibition fees to be paid. In the beginning, it was still quite irregular. Things then became steadier from 2013 onwards.
Do you/your company pay this exhibition fee from your own budget or from public or private funds, from subsidies?
We take the exhibition fees into account when we apply for cultural funding once a year. We have been mostly successful with this in recent years. We host between eight and twelve exhibitions/projects a year, sometimes with several participants. So we couldn’t afford this from our own budget – i.e. from membership fees and some donations. This is only possible if we receive funding.
What form does your exhibition remuneration take?
We pay an exhibition fee. However, we are not usually able to provide funding for a catalog or publication for an individual exhibition. Incidentally, if we receive less funding than we applied for, we do not recommend that the actors come to the kiosk with the same project for less budget (and thus also exhibition remuneration). Rather an adjustment of the effort to the new budget or even a rejection. That is important to us.
Do you follow a certain pattern or is it always renegotiated or adapted?
Exhibitions and projects at our main venue, the Kiosk am Reileck in Halle (Saale), last between 4 and 6 weeks. Since 2020, artists have received an exhibition fee of 600 euros for this. Before that it was 500 euros. We adjust this accordingly for short projects. Once a year, when the funding applications are due, we talk about these sums in the association.
Do you also offer a participation fee for setting up the exhibition or for any transportation costs incurred?
Yes, there is such a thing. If the applications for funding are successful, we finance material costs for the exhibition or project. As a rule, the exhibition is created directly for the kiosk on the Reileck. This site-specific work is often quite time-consuming, requiring preparatory work in the artist’s studio and a few days to set up and dismantle. This has a lot to do with the special nature of our space – a former newspaper kiosk – and the public space around it, which we also use for our projects. These are often interactive projects that involve passers-by and guests. In addition, there are also allowances for set-up and dismantling as well as travel and transportation costs. We take care of press and public relations work and social media as an association.
