Open anonymous two-phase art-in-architecture competition
The competition procedure is carried out in accordance with the Guidelines for Art in Architecture (2012) and based on the Guidelines for Planning Competitions (RPW 2013). The competition language is German. Around 20 artists and artist groups will be selected for the 2nd phase.
The competition is open to professional artists/groups (worldwide). The participation of young artists, artist groups or young graduates of an art academy or art college is expressly desired.
Competition task
The European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is a world leader in global numerical weather prediction and climatology. The ECMWF headquarters are located in Reading. Following the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, a new additional location was established in Bonn, from which the tasks that the ECMWF performs as part of the EU’s Copernicus Earth observation program are carried out.
A site on Ludwig-Erhard-Allee was selected for the new location of the ECMWF in Bonn. The design of the new building for the ECMWF is based on the already completed new UN extension building, also in Bonn. The new campus is scheduled for completion in 2027.
Art on the building is also planned as part of the planned construction project. A work of art is to be created in the outdoor areas of the new building near the entrance, but outside the fencing on a vegetation island, which is already a tangible signet of the ECMWF in the “public space” and expresses its personality. The artwork should also provide a positive opportunity for exchange and communication and be appropriate to the demands of the location.
The artwork, which was specially designed for the center, is intended not least to express the value and appreciation of the employees, their science and their diverse backgrounds. It would be desirable for the user if the artwork also offered a place for informal meetings.
The aim is to develop a convincing artistic work in the form of a sculpture, sculpture or installation. The submitted artistic design should represent an independent, self-confident and artistically high-quality contribution. The technical, structural and functional requirements must be taken into account when designing the art and presented in detail in the 2nd phase. Attention must be paid to the special conditions of the property.
The aim of the art-in-architecture competition is to find artists who succeed in creating an independent view of the ECMWF’s self-image with an art-in-architecture contribution.
Realization costs: 500,000 euros gross
