The artists’ town of Kalbe is an innovative project in the Altmark region with the aim of countering demographic change through art and culture. In line with Joseph Beuys’ concept of social sculpture, the artists’ town of Kalbe sees itself as a place where the creative potential of art is developed in order to build a free, sustainable society worth living in. The listed buildings provide artists with inspiring working conditions in the heart of Kalbe’s old town. Through the activities of the City of Artists Kalbe, which take place throughout the year, there is also the opportunity to get to know other national and international artists. Concentration on the work, but also integration into a lively cultural context are possible depending on requirements. There are numerous rooms for exhibitions, concerts, readings and performances. The competition is aimed at professionally working, particularly talented and primarily younger artists in the fields of visual arts and literature who have already achieved public recognition with their work and who are still open in their artistic development. Applications from students are excluded. Please note: Applications from artists from Saxony-Anhalt are expressly encouraged, but not a prerequisite. Funding for other artists is possible if their outstanding artistic work is of particular interest to the state of Saxony-Anhalt or if a connection to the state can be established. The State Chancellery and Ministry of Culture supports the three-month stay in the artists’ town of Kalbe with a grant of €1,500 per month. Scholarship holders only incur incidental costs in the amount of the telephone and internet connection fees.
