Culture needs inclusion – making diversity visible

In Germany, over 20% of the population live with an impairment – 95% of impairments only occur in the course of life. According to Article 30 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, people with disabilities have a guaranteed right to participate in the arts and culture on an equal basis with others. For the BBK Saxony-Anhalt, it is a self-evident and consistent attitude to stand up for enabling the participation of artists with disabilities. For example, we have contacted representatives of EUCREA – the Association for Art and Disability, the Magdeburg art association Zinnober e.V., the artists’ group Farbenflimmer of the Stadtmission Halle (Saale) and the Stammtisch Inklusion Halle (Saale) in order to actively participate in changing the public perception of artists with disabilities and to help shape the diversification of the art and cultural sector in favor of the people affected.

A position paper on diversity in the arts and cultural sector in Germany is available for download from EUCREA here: https://www.eucrea.de/images/downloads/Diversitaet_Online_4.pdf.

Inclusion as a topic of the BBK transparency survey

Since 2022, the BBK Saxony-Anhalt has conducted an annual survey of its members. In the 2023 transparency survey, we included the topic of inclusion in this survey for the first time. The result has shown: Inclusion is an issue for many BBK members. The specific fields of action that can be derived from this for Saxony-Anhalt will need to be clarified in summer 2024.
