The Kaltern Winery, a cooperative winery around Lake Kaltern and one of the most important wine producers in South Tyrol, invites up-and-coming and established artists to interpret the 7th edition of its kunst.stück project.
This year, the focus is on the Vernatsch grape variety, an indigenous South Tyrolean grape variety that has played an important role in Kaltern since the beginning of viticulture. The kunst.stück project of the Kaltern winery began with the 2014 grape harvest. Since then, every year the grape that best represents nature’s work of art and most inspires the cellar master with its quality is selected for a limited edition wine with an artist’s label.
This year, the artist’s task is to design a special label for Vernatsch DOC 2023, a fine and elegantly floral wine with a brilliant red color, created for the occasion from the grapes of two particularly significant vineyards: a historic vineyard on Pergel that is over 100 years old and a young plant in the Guyot system that is 15 years old. This combination of tradition and innovation, which has grown over many generations, reflects the character and development of the Vernatsch grape and inspired this year’s theme: “Character over generations”. All information on taking part in the competition can be found on the website of the Kaltern Winery at the following link: https://www.kellereikaltern.com/blog/detail/sCategory/64/blogArticle/250
Label proposals can be submitted until September 15, 2024 (11:59 pm). After that, a jury selected by the Kaltern Winery will make an initial pre-selection, which will be shown on the winery’s website. Visitors to the website will be able to vote for their preferred label from November 11 to December 10 and will also have the opportunity to take part in a prize draw and win special prizes.
The official presentation of the Vernatsch DOC 2023 label is planned for spring 2025; the winner will receive 1,000.00 euros and can use the premises in the Winecenter Kaltern for an exhibition of their works. The following grape varieties were selected for the previous editions of the kunst.stück project: Pinot Blanc 2014, interpreted by Claudio Paternoster; Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 with the label by Margit Pittschieler; Kalterersee Classico Superiore 2016, represented by Stefano Mandato; Merlot of the 2018 vintage with the label by Anita Ladurner; Pinot Grigio 2019, interpreted by Federico Petrolito; Lagrein Riserva DOC 2020 with the label by Giuseppe Rametta. * The winery. With 590 members and 440 hectares of vineyards, Kellerei Kaltern is today the largest cooperative winery in South Tyrol and one of the most important voices in local viticulture. As a historic winery that represents the entire municipality of Kaltern, it is also the most important interpreter of the Vernatsch grape, which here bears the DOC appellation “Kalterersee Classico Superiore”. The “Quintessenz” line (five single-varietal interpretations that embody the essence of the terroir and the spirit of the Kaltern winery) represents the top quality of the winery. The range of wines is rounded off by the Selektion line, whose grapes come from historic vineyards, and the Klassik line with cuvées that express varietal typicity. Since 2019, the Kaltern winery has been Fair’n Green certified, a seal of approval for sustainable viticulture.
