Frappant e.V. is calling on artists, curators, designers, architects and activists to apply to Frappant Galerie with an exhibition concept for 2025. Frappant Galerie is a non-commercial exhibition space in the middle of a larger, cooperatively managed center for alternative culture, education, creative industries and social affairs in Hamburg-Altona. The Frappant Association has existed since 2009; it is active in the network of independent art venues ART OFF HAMBURG and is established as an art venue in Hamburg. The exhibition program of Frappant e.V. is funded by the Hamburg Ministry of Culture and Media.
We give preference to applications:
– concepts for group exhibitions in which at least three artistic positions interact with each other
– concepts by independent curators
– cross-genre and cross-spatial (analog and digital) approaches and projects
– supra-regional collaborations involving Hamburg artists
– exchange with other independent art venues and project spaces outside Hamburg
– exhibition concepts, that operate in an interdisciplinary way between visual arts, performing arts, music, text/literature, urbanism and socioculture
– projects that observe, criticize, question, queer, redesign, deconstruct; take feminist positions and include alternative perspectives to the Western heteronormative view
– accompanying programs during the exhibition (performances, readings, workshops, screenings, etc.) are very welcome.).
What we offer: Our gallery consists of three rooms of roughly the same size with a total area of 140m2 and approx. 4m high ceilings as well as a fourth, digital exhibition room: The Fourth Room dervierteraum.org . This digital exhibition space can be used in parallel to the analog rooms. The gallery is run by the exhibition team and other active members of Frappant e.V. on a voluntary basis. We curate the overall program, advise the exhibiting artists, assist with public relations and networking and provide technical support. However, the exhibiting artists remain primarily responsible (see exhibitor information at frappant.org/galerie ). The duration of the exhibition with us can be either one, two or three weekends (supervision must be provided by the artists). Exhibition examples can be found on Instagram @frappantgalerie.
Who can apply: The Frappant Gallery is open to professional artists, curators, designers, architects and activists who have applied with a meaningful, written exhibition concept that has been accepted by the Frappant exhibition team. Applicants should have a qualified artistic or curatorial practice. Applications can be submitted until September 1, 2024 at The application should be a coherent PDF. The name of the file must include the exhibition title and must not exceed 10 MB in size (please do not send video or audio examples as an additional file, but via hyperlink or file transfer). The application must contain the following information – Exhibition concept (approx. 1-2 DIN A4 pages), which refers to a central theme as well as to the spatial conditions of the Frappant Gallery (analog and digital) – Details of the participating artists (each with CV, max. 1 Din A4 page per participating person) – Image gallery with exemplary works by the participating artists – Date preferences and desired duration of the exhibition (1, 2 or more weekends). Applications that do not meet these requirements or are received late will not be considered. The Frappant exhibition team will decide whether to include the application in the exhibition program at the beginning of October 2024. However, a binding commitment can only be made once Frappant e.V. has received a funding commitment for 2025 from the Hamburg Ministry of Culture and Media (expected in December 2024).

We especially welcome applications: – with concepts intending the interaction of at least three artistic positions – put forward by freelance curators – with approaches and projects, that transcend genres or are spatially encompassing (analogue and digital) – by transregional collaborations, involving artists from Hamburg – that facilitate exchange with other independent art and project spaces outside of Hamburg – with exhibition concepts, that operate interdisciplinary between fine arts, performing arts, music, text/literature, urbanism and social culture – of projects that observe, critique, question, queer, redesign, deconstruct, assume feminist positions and contain perspectives alternative to the western-heteronormative viewpoint – planning for accompanying program during the exhibition (performances, lectures, workshops, screenings etc.).)
