CURRENT – ART AND URBAN SPACE

CURRENT – KUNST UND URBANER RAUM is a transdisciplinary festival that takes place every two years in Stuttgart. CURRENT develops exemplary formats to experimentally explore artistic forms, strategies and practices in the context of the city. The third edition of CURRENT – KUNST UND URBANER RAUM will take place from June 26 to July 27, 2025 and invites artists and artist groups to propose new works for urban space that explore the theme of “air” in all its social, political, ecological and material forms.

The air – invisible, but omnipresent. Fleeting, intangible and always in motion. It can only be experienced indirectly. Air carries sounds, smells and vibrations, moves in winds, manifests itself in the fluttering of sails, allows birds to glide and clouds to drift. Air transmits sound waves, temperature and particles; it manifests itself through its effect on the environment and the senses. As a mixture of oxygen, nitrogen and other gases, air is essential for life on earth. While atmosphere refers to the entire layer of gas that surrounds and protects the planet, air is only a part of it. Air is a cycle that connects everything and everyone. For a long time, air was not given much attention, but in terms of air pollution, fires and storms as a result of the climate crisis and as breath in (Covid) pandemics, it has become the focus of social and political attention.

CURRENT follows the currents and traces of air through the city. Air defines the paths of the festival, is the guiding foundation and serves as a narrative, aesthetic and artistic element for the interplay of movement and standstill. With this OPEN CALL, two artist positions are selected to examine the significance of air in its urban, historical and social dimensions and to develop new works.

Formats and media: a media board at Pragsattel and a total of eight flags at two locations (Stuttgart city center and Degerloch) are available. In addition, the works can be accompanied by other artistic formats such as performances, walks, readings or talks. Production costs of EUR 4,000 gross are available for each submission, with the exception of fixed costs (rent and installation), which are covered directly by the organizer (see cost planning). If the work is realized, the artists or artist groups will receive a gross fee of EUR 4,000.
