INHABIT // Artist-in-Residence

The artist-in-residence program INHABIT invites artists from various disciplines to work with scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt. For a scientific research institute that deals with questions of aesthetics, the presence and challenging impulse of artistic work is of particular importance. The Institute regards the integration of artistic thinking and knowledge as a reflective practice in its own right as an important dimension of its work. This is because the dialog between artists and scientists and the confrontation with other perspectives represents a mutually productive environment for both sides. This is why INHABIT invites artists to spend three months developing a new artistic work in a scientific context or deepening an existing project.

Openness to the work of the institute and the willingness and curiosity to collaborate with individual scientists or research groups from different disciplines is a prerequisite. During the artist residency, the MPIEA provides spaces and resources and enables a productive environment for experimentation, dialog and collaboration. In cooperation with changing cultural institutions in Frankfurt, the artistic works are then shown publicly as exhibitions or performances and supplemented by discursive formats.

Who is wanted:

  • Artists from the fields of performative arts and music who are interested in collaboration between the artistic and scientific fields;
  • Artists who develop a new work and show it as an exhibition, performance, concert or other public presentation format;
  • Artists who are anchored in contemporary culture and respond to the Institute with innovative and challenging ideas/questions.
