Petra Reichenbach in Annaburg

The art book “Starke Frauen in der Lichtenburg” was nominated by the Stiftung Buchkunst as “Germany’s Most Beautiful Regional Book”. We would like to celebrate this with a special kind of book presentation: on Sunday, 27.10.2024 from 10 a.m. we invite you to the Annaburger Porzellaneum for a story breakfast “Strong women in Lichtenburg”.

Around 1700, Lichtenburg Castle on the Elbe was considered one of the most beautiful castles in Saxony. Among others, the two electresses Anna Sophia of Saxony and her sister Wilhelmine Ernestine of the Palatinate, who came from the Danish ruling dynasty, resided in the Saxon widow’s seat. A short lecture by art historian Dr. Silke Herz will provide insights into the ceremonial and religious duties of the electresses at the Saxon court and in Lichtenburg Castle, not far from Annaburg Castle.

But we also look at the other side of Lichtenburg: first a castle, then a concentration camp – the changing use of the extensive complex in Prettin could not be more disturbing. In this essayistic illustrated book, five electresses who resided in Lichtenburg Castle from the end of the 16th to the beginning of the 18th century and five prisoners of the Lichtenburg women’s concentration camp from December 1937 to May 1939 enter into an imaginary dialog about motives for the exclusion of dissidents. The ten women’s fates from the past show that discrimination and persecution have always been a relevant topic and still are today.

In a discussion between the artist and publisher of the book Petra Reichenbach and the head of the concentration camp memorial site Melanie Engler, moderated by Jürgen Dannenberg, chairman of the board of the Annaburger Porzellaneum e.V. association, the history and excitement of the site will be discussed.

The entrance fee of 18 euros includes a sumptuous breakfast buffet.
