Gender equality is still a long way from being achieved in the arts. Whether in terms of payment, presentation opportunities or the awarding of prizes: Success continues to depend on the gender of the artist. The Rudolf Augstein Foundation is therefore launching a new funding line: re:balance – gender equality in the arts. The aim is to contribute to structural change by creating publicity and individual mentoring in the art sector, which is strongly characterized by personal networks. The funding line kicks off with the mentoring program for artists, which took place for the first time in 2023. Applications for the second round are now open. The mentoring program is aimed at ambitious young talents and experienced artists with high potential at decisive turning points in their careers (all women as well as trans, inter and non-binary people). Artists of all disciplines from all over Germany can apply. The aim of the program is to support the participating artists (mentees) in taking a leap forward in their careers. The mentees work in tandems with renowned mentors for seven months on an individual professional issue or challenge. The expertise and experience of the mentors serve to connect the mentees with each other and with decision-makers in their respective fields, to strengthen their artistic position and self-presentation and to provide them with competent support in solving the tasks they have set themselves. The program also provides strategies for dealing with gender-related hurdles. In addition, the mentees are trained at a workshop weekend in topics such as self-presentation, negotiation skills and work-life balance. Following a successful pilot, the mentoring program will enter a new round from September 2024 to April 2025. The application deadline is April 14, 2024. Participation in the program is free of charge. We cover travel costs within Germany for up to three tandem meetings and all other group meetings. We find individually tailored solutions for childcare. Selection criteria: Artistic excellence, strategic interest in your career, fit with the mentors, originality and independence of your artistic approach, social relevance of your artistic position. We encourage artists to apply regardless of their cultural or social background, age, religion, ideology or disability.
