Horner Eck is looking for unexpected positions from artists of all disciplines that deal with the questions and themes of the cooperative, disrupt the location or fit in with it. They should stimulate discourse that moves away from the expected bar snack.
The Horner Eck has existed in the Bremen district for over 40 years. At the beginning of 2019, a group of young people took over the business and reorganized it as a cooperative. For the collective members and the more than 70 comrades inside, the Horner Eck is more than just a pub. The Horner Eck sees itself as a social and cultural institution. The cultural program turns the pub into a place of encounter and exchange. Unlike in a gallery or museum, guests do not usually enter the space primarily with the intention of viewing art. But they are confronted with it. This unexpected confrontation makes art accessible to a wide audience and integrates the cultural experience into everyday life. This creates discourse and new impulses. Various target groups, including regular guests, the neighborhood, students Teachers, artists, drinkers, Werder fans and all kinds of other people from buten un binnen meet, talk and exchange ideas. In 2024, the collective bought the corner building and is now developing the interdisciplinary space into a cultural center.
In curating the exhibitions, Horner Eck attaches great importance to a program that is dedicated to the questions that the cooperative asks itself. How do we want to live together? How do we want to work? How do we use space? And who gets space? What do we need to change and what do we need to maintain? How can we take (better) care of each other? Art can be disruptive, unusual, take us out of our comfort zone, be conspicuous or inconspicuous. All forms of intervention are conceivable. After consultation with the collective, (almost) anything is possible, as long as the pub is not too restricted. The works should be smoke-resistant. We show art in various forms, always with social relevance and reference to the space.
The Horner Eck is open from Monday to Sunday from 6 pm to view the room and enjoy a beer. If you are unable to visit, we can send you photos and measurements of the room.
