The annual FUTURE FESTIVALS serve as analog and digital platforms of the EU project DIALOG CITY to reach a broad, diverse audience. The participating European cities were Mondoví (IT) in 2023 and Graz (AT) in 2024. residencies were shown on site and presented online during the FUTURE FESTIVALS. The next FUTURE FESTIVAL will take place in 2025 and will be organized by Aschaffenburg (DE) and Montpellier (FR). Each city will host its own artist residency.
The DIALOG CITY ART FOR PUBLIC RESIDENCY PROGRAMME invites artists from all disciplines – from painting, photography and sculpture to design and architecture – who pursue a participatory approach in their work and depict global developments in the local area to apply for the artist residency in Aschaffenburg. This will take place under the motto “Society in Transition”.
We welcome project proposals that focus on aspects of sustainability and/or cultural heritage. Aschaffenburg is a city with a rich and diverse cultural heritage. For years, the city has focused on conscious sustainability, as well as a people-centered and dialogue-oriented digital transformation (DIALOG CITY strategy of the city). Special mention should also be made of the diverse and formative history of the city’s paper industry: since the middle of the 19th century, Aschaffenburg has been known as the “city of colored paper” thanks to its many paper mills; Aschaffenburg entrepreneurs such as Alois Dessauer did pioneering work and ensured that paper production is inextricably linked to the city’s economic prosperity, technological change and ultimately its cultural identity. Curiosity, courage and inventiveness are also exemplary of an open and inclusive society.
The project proposal, whether digital or analog, should take up various aspects of this topic, present them in a participatory manner and express them artistically. The artist will have the opportunity to work in a public FUTURE PAVILION and realize his/her creative ideas there. There are no limits to the imagination here!
The artist residency begins on 02.05.2025 and ends on 15.07.2025.

THE DIALOG CITY PROJECT
The DIALOG CITY project, co-funded by the EU, is an innovative approach to shaping the digital cultural future of European cities. It comprises seven European partners and organizes various activities. Its aim is to develop ideas that enable all citizens to actively participate in the digital transformation of our society and implement their own ideas. Citizen participation is therefore an important aspect of the project. One example of this is the concept of the transnational digital citizens’ archive CITIZEN ARCHIVE PLATFORM (CAP), which was developed jointly by the City and Collegiate Archives of Aschaffenburg and the City Archives of Graz.
