Open Call on the topic of ‘Commons’ – the need

das Bedürfnis is issuing an Open Call for 2025: Commons are resources, such as public space, water, air or knowledge, that are appropriated, managed and used in a shared, self-organized and needs-oriented process.

In line with the city of Halle’s cultural theme year “Coming, Going, Staying – Halle, City of Bridges”, we at Das Bedürfnis e.V. would like to invite you once again to perform in Halle’s smallest listed building. From March 2025, we want to present a varied cultural program on 13 m² in the now renovated former public restroom aka “toilet”. We are looking for your suggestions for the new annual program.

People come to places and stay as soon as accessibility and participation are provided. People often leave again because these conditions are not met, because they feel excluded and isolated.
We are particularly interested in how such conditions can be created and consolidated in the city of Halle. The question of the accessibility of urban space, on which the association is based, gives rise to our own interpretation of the topic: the importance of public space as a bridge through which the residents of a city first become urban society and ultimately citizens. That is why we are focusing our annual program on the concept of common goods, the commons. Community access to urban resources such as public space, water, air or knowledge is considered essential.
