Kunst Raum Mitte is offering a residency for researchers, artists, curators, authors and cultural professionals for a two-month period between June and August 2024. The call is aimed at individuals and groups with a focus on archival practices. The residency refers to the historical material (exhibition photos, press articles, correspondence, administrative files, ephemera on exhibition projects) of the former galerie weisser elefant, which was founded in 1987 in Almstadtstraße in East Berlin. At the time, its foundation marked a turning point in the cultural landscape of the GDR: characterized by political upheaval, the state-sponsored galerie weisser elefant established itself as a platform for emerging, independent art that had an oppositional character and made the boundaries of the concept of art at the time more permeable. Interdisciplinary projects were shown in this municipal exhibition venue until 2023. The gallery starts a new orientation as Kunst Raum Mitte. We are looking for archival practices that deal with the temporalities, relationships and contradictions that characterize the galerie weisser elefant archive.
