WILHELMHÖPFNER PRIZE

The Winckelmann Society has been awarding the Wilhelm Höpfner Prize since 1984. It is primarily awarded to young artists who take up themes from antiquity in their works or are inspired by works from the past. Following in the footsteps of the Magdeburg painter and graphic artist Wilhelm Höpfner (1899-1968), whose estate is administered by the Winckelmann Museum in Stendal, the prize is awarded exclusively for graphic and printmaking works and is aimed at professional artists under the age of 40. The prize money amounts to 2,000 euros.

The Wilhelm Höpfner Prize will be awarded by the President of the Winckelmann Society at the Annual General Meeting of the Winckelmann Society in December 2024. The award ceremony is accompanied by a small exhibition of works organized by the Winckelmann Society, which will be presented in the gallery of the Winckelmann Museum, as well as a small accompanying catalog.

Submissions must include meaningful drawings and/or prints (photographs of the works as image files by e-mail or wet transfer), a list of the works (title, year of creation, artistic technique, format) and a curriculum vitae.

Please do not send us originals as we accept no liability for them and they cannot be considered by the jury members.

The awarding of the prize is decided by the Winckelmann Society’s Board of Trustees on the recommendation of the Höpfner Committee. Legal recourse is excluded.

Applications should be sent to Dr. Schade
